Vital Tools for Architects

An architect is nothing without his tools & toughness. A lot goes into the process while working on a project by an Architect. For instance, in completing a project, an architect can use three main types of tools on a daily basis: drawing tools, measuring tools, and computer software

With the advent of technology that keeps on evolving lately, it is undeniable that architects can now use technology as a tool. If you’re curious as to what those tools might be, here are three categories of the most used tools among architects!

1. Essential Supplies

All drawing tools, especially are an Architect’s best friend. The sketchbooks, tracing paper rolls, grid sheets, etc are the materials of consistent progress of the design process and ideas. To start every design the drawing tools first come into use. A good set of pens & pencils, Markers, Colors, and other desired stationary are the supporting characters of this tool!

Mainly, a decent bag to carry it all and a notepad with a note-taking pen or sketchbook is the most important tool which you need to carry every day and everywhere. To client meetings, site visits, material selection, vendor meetings – all seek to require these essential drawing tools.

2. Drafting equipment

While manual drafting any drawings, the equipment that is necessary include drawing board, ruler, cutting mat, glue & modeling scalpel (for 3D models), T-scale and the digital equipment includes a tablet, laptop, or PC. Also, consider having a measuring tape & the adjustable drawing tube to carry your drawings to different locations without the paper getting torn and/or damaged.

A copy of Standards, guidelines & regulations dealing with the current project should always be at your disposal, it's ok if you have saved it on your phones too. But make sure a useful design guide that’s required is full of data on just about anything you can think of, from the width of a hospital corridor or parking bay to the size of a basketball ground.

3. Skills & Software

As an architecture student or a professional architect, the need to up your game in design skills are considered as one of the most important tools to have in order to succeed in practice and software knowledge - by staying up to date with the current trends in the industry.

Make sure you always remain in touch with the updated versions and techniques used in softwares like Auto CAD, Sketch Up, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lumion, etc. Stay equipped with an ample amount of new pen drives, C.D’s, and mainly decent hardware components & specifications for working smoothly during a project.

Bonus point:

To keep and stay on track of the project and with employees, clients and vendors use productive project management apps or even Google docs, sheets, calendars, etc. Save your files constantly on hard disks. And lastly, An architect is only rightful with his tools if he maintains and uses them wisely.

With toughness and strong will-power to overcome all obstacles in going through it all, an architect comes along away not just as a professional but just as an improved individual to design by design. Develop a well-framed mindset to become successful in your industry and follow a strong set of systems to hold on to forever & the next time anyone asks you what you do, say it with pride,

Being AWSOMATIC! A lot goes into spending on these tools, but these are what works out for an efficient working method for an architect. Some exclusive tools as per personal choices can also turn out quite expensive, but let’s face it – if we are spending on our profession, to get better at it, there should be no harm in that. Unless in its excess! Hence, use these vital tools to your best!
