Golden quotes from Golden ones!
The golden quotes from my industry, Architecture & Design are the thrust of this blog. So why is Architecture so special of a profession to all, apart from it being able to create something that would remain for a lifetime, it’s more than what it speaks for & we as Architects should feel the need to create that difference by our creation, isn't it? “Architecture should make us feel different if not, engineering should be enough” – Daniel Libeskind.
As covered in my earlier blog about this
Superpower i.e. architecture, The 5 Fun-Facts of a Superpower. Here let’s look at how
we can create an impact with our work, through 5 inspiring golden quotes by
famous Architects while getting enlightened on some of their works & the notion to have created a difference.
1. First Golden Quote
Being clear as a client on how you plan to use your spaces is one thing, but telling the architect how to design those spaces is a whole different thing. An architect can not only add the features and functionalities you request but also suggest what he or she might find relevant to your desires.
As the award-winning
architect, Gehry himself quite faced a lot of criticism for using Titanium in
his famous Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao, Spain. But Thanks to his “Guggenheim effect,” Bilbao has managed to surpass its city revitalization objectives.
Since its inauguration, millions of tourists annually visit this once decaying
city, have a look at its impact,
Perhaps
Gehry rightfully meant through his quote, for all to believe in Architects
& their vision, because they know what they are doing whether it’s choosing
the material, designing, developing concepts. Hence keep faith in
Architects!
Frank Gehry
Famous Works: Dancing House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Louis Vuitton
Foundation, Millennium Bridge, Golden Fish Sculpture, etc.
2. Second Golden Quote
Architects
can get inspiration from almost everything they see. Having the most elaborated
imaginations you can think of, giving rise to various outcomes for the designs. So
can you imagine a marine animal or lotus giving inspiration to a whole
building design itself?
Yes, like Norman foster’s building 30 St Mary Axe, informally known as “The Gherkin”, is a standing example of great inspiration in Architecture. The famous 180m high Gherkin tower in London is although more often linked to a vegetable, but was actually inspired by a curious marine animal known as Venus's flower basket sea sponge (Euplectella aspergillum).
It’s a great example of “Biomimicry Architecture”, also like Lotus Temple in New Delhi, which got its inspiration from the Lotus flower.
That’s how anything can inspire Architects! So when you see a unique structure,
try knowing about its amazing inspirations too.
3. Third Golden Quote
Expressing
the idea that whatever one does should be done thoroughly; i.e. details are
important like what we know as "The devil is in the details" is an idiom that refers to a catch or mysterious element hidden in the details, meaning
that something might seem simple at a first look but will take more time and effort
to complete than expected. Whether it’s adding a column detail or a mullion detail
or even as simple as the size of a window.
Mies’s New York’s Seagram Building, where he paid attention to the way he carefully spaced the window panels and vertical bronze mullions related to the lines of the plaza. To preserve the crisp geometry, window shades could be operated in three positions: fully open, halfway open/closed, or fully closed.
Mies expresses that those little things, the tiny minutia of detail, that ultimately make beautiful products, and beautiful houses. Some of Mies van der Rohe's most famous projects: Farnsworth House, Crown Hall, the Seagram Building, and the German Pavilion (also known as the Barcelona Pavilion).
4. Fourth Golden Quote
Now to the deconstructivist architect who's known as “The Queen of the Curve”, she made heads turn with her out-of-the-world creations in the industry of Design & Architecture. Using majorly distinct degrees of angles & curves in her design, her approach has always been world-wide appreciated & looked upon as some of the best works in Architecture.
Like her first major project
Vitra Fire Station or the stunning Heydar-Aliyev cultural center noted for
its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp
angles. The Heydar Aliyev Center represents a fluid form that emerges by the
folding of the landscape's natural topography and by the wrapping of individual
functions of the Center.
So here’s
to not only translating different perspective & angles into every aspect of
life but also let's celebrate design in a way where we are not only are fixed to
rigid forms or linear approaches in design but understand Zaha's work ethic and be
inspired by her mantras for looking design with different angels and lets not
just stick to one.
5. Fifth Golden Quote
Lastly, no matter how much you know of anything, you should never stop learning in life. Learning is both difficult and wonderful. No matter how experienced an architect you are or just a beginner for that matter. Whether you learn through these informative blogs or get to know a new technique used in a building or learn specifically on any subject related to Architecture, just keep learning!
The discomfort that comes from learning is less welcome as we age. Yet life's experiences teach us that to stop learning is to stop creating. It is fitting too that this quote is associated with Michelangelo who is one of the most influential and significant Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of Western Civilization.
So Being AWSOMATIC! next time you see Architects sketching a building, scenery, or an object or just putting down their thoughts, who knows which of these approaches they chose from but they have the skills to create wonders of their own through various ideas & bring it to life some-day.
